Cefn Saeson (Ysgol Gyfun Cefn Saeson) is a mixed, English-medium comprehensive school located in Cimla, Neath, South Wales. It is located within the Neath Port Talbot County Borough. The school serves the population of 11-16 year olds living in Cimla, Tonna, Tonmawr, Pontrhydyfen and parts of Neath. Cefn Saeson is located on Afan Valley Road. The school motto is Bid Ben Bid Bont. Also, another motto is "A Learning Community Where Success is Expected and Celebrated".
The school was built after the abolition of grammar education in Wales. This took place during the 1970s.
The feeder primary schools are Crynallt Junior School, Tonnau Primary, Tonmawr Primary, Pontrhydyfen Primary, Gnoll Primary and Alderman Davies CiW Primary.
The school colours are grey, white and burgundy. The winter uniform consists of grey trousers/skirt, white shirt, school tie, burgundy jumper and black school shoes. White polo shirts can also be worn in the Summer Term.
There are fifteen subject areas at the school, each with a head of department. In Key Stage 3 the curriculum consists of twelve compulsory subjects: English, Maths, Welsh, History, Religious Education, Music, Science, Technology, French, Geography, Art and Physical Education. Pupils are also offered Drama, Spanish and Personal Development.
The school offers a wide range of after-school activities. Each year the school holds a musical evening and carol service in St David's Church, Neath. These events are a big part of the year for the school orchestra, choir and chamber choir. Cefn Saeson has many sports clubs, including netball, rugby, martial arts and football!
The school is one of the many schools in the area taking part in the 5x60 scheme. Many clubs take place after school including girls football, surfing and trampolining.
Former headmaster, Alun Griffiths, received the award for headteacher of the year in the Welsh division of the Teaching Awards. Former deputy headmaster, Peter Jones, has recently won the Tedd Wragg Lifetime Achievement Award, given at a large gala in central London by Lenny Henry and broadcast on BBC2.
